Moving across San Jose- from Japantown to Shasta-Hanchett!
Hi Friends,
Thanks for staying engaged with this campaign! Back-to-school nights are happening this week across the district with parents getting to meet teachers and learn more about what's happening in the classroom. (Including a new math curriculum- I'll share my thoughts on that next week!) But for now I want to tell you-
Why I'm eating Panda Express for dinner
Our district asks most Title I schools to cover science camp out of Title I funds. Science camp is part of the 5th grade curriculum district-wide, every student does it, so it's hard to see why it's being paid for with dollars meant to help the highest-need populations, rather than via a district source. I've spent years working in our district trying to come up with parent-driven solutions to these kinds of problems. Tonight, Trace's PTO is hosting a fundraiser to help fund science camp for all 5th graders and save our Title I funds for other needs. I'll be participating by ordering Panda Express online with code 9015621, and I hope you will too! But even more so, I hope you'll help this campaign so we can have a voice on the school board who has seen and tried to solve these problems.
Getting the word out
Volunteers and I door-knocked in Japantown last weekend, and more door-knocking is happening this weekend! 9-12 on Saturday in the Shasta-Hanchett Neighborhood. No experience necessary! So far, 80% of our campaign's door knockers have never done it before. I'm so enthusiastic that people are engaging and creating their own political power.
